Parashat Vayikra — The Triple Sin of Dishonesty by Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

the light of 14 Nisan 5783 |  אור י"ד ניסן ה'תשפ"ג

Parashat Vayikra — The Triple Sin of Dishonesty by Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Parashat Vayikra addresses the situation of somebody who falsely denied on oath owing money to another person. The Torah (5:21) gives several examples, such as a situation where a person entrusted his fellow with his object, or lent him money, and the recipient later denied receiving the object or money. Another example mentioned by the Torah is "Ashak Et Amito" – where somebody hired a person to work for him, and then denied owing him wages. If the person falsely swore that he did not owe the object or money, and then confessed his wrongdoing, he must bring a special atonement sacrifice in addition to paying what he owes as well as a fine.

The Or Ha’haim Ha’kadosh (Rav Haim Ben-Attar, 1696-1743) notes that the Torah uses three different expressions in reference to this offense. First, it says, "Nefesh Ki Teheta" – "If a soul committed a sin." Thereafter, the Torah says, "U’ma’ala Ma’al B’Hashem" – "and transgressed against G-d." Finally, the Torah describes "Ve’kihesh Ba’amito" – that the person "denies his fellow."

The Or Ha’haim explains that these three phrases refer to the three different aspects of this sin, falsely denying a debt that one owes to his fellow.

Firstly, and most obviously, "Ki Teheta" – such a person commits the sin of theft, keeping for himself that which belongs to his fellow. Such conduct constitutes theft, plain and simple, no different from forcibly seizing someone else’s possession.

Secondly, "U’ma’ala Ma’al B’Hashem" – this denial amounts to a direct offense against G-d Himself. If a person rightfully owns something, then we must believe that G-d, in His impeccable justness, determined that this person should own that money or that piece of property. If a person keeps for himself that which belongs to his fellow, then he in essence casts aspersions on G-d’s justice, challenging G-d’s decision to give the object or money in question to the other individual. The Or Ha’haim suggests that the Torah uses a double expression – "U’ma’ala Ma’al" – to allude to the two injustices that the liar is attributing to G-d: he challenges G-d’s decision that his fellow should have this property, and he also challenges G-d’s decision that he himself should not have it. This challenge against G-d’s justice is the second aspect of this offense.

Finally, the Torah speaks of this person as "Kihesh Ba’amito" – literally, "denying his fellow." He does not just deny owing his fellow the object or money that he owes; he denies his fellow’s uprightness. He essentially accuses the rightful owner of what he himself is guilty of – dishonesty, charging that he is trying to steal by falsely claiming that he is owed money or an object. The person thus not only casts aspersions on G-d – he casts aspersions on his fellow, turning him into the criminal.

Seeking to profit through dishonesty is thus a triple crime – theft, a challenge against G-d’s justice, and falsely accusing one’s fellow of wrongdoing. Each one in its own right suffices for us to avoid such misconduct; the combination of all three makes dishonesty especially egregious, and requires us to exercise extreme care to conduct all our financial affairs with strict honesty.

I have a couple of questions for the Rav:

—How does this triple sin of dishonesty apply to the relationship between a government and the people it serves (or rules over)?

—Does a government have the right to, or is it allowed to, do or seek to do any of the above things the Rav wrote about at the people's expense (taxes, whether paid annually or through a general sales tax)?

(Readers, please feel free to add your questions in the comments.)

Is the "Great Reset" happening NEXT WEEK??? plus how this might apply to ISRAEL and her covenant with HQB"H

17 Iyyar 5782, a Shmitah (God's Reset) Year |  י"ז אייר ה"תשפ"ב שנת שמיטה

32nd Day of the Omer | ל"ב לעומר

 UPDATES BELOW

What kind of reset do we want this Shmitah year?

I hope I'm only panicking. Somehow, I doubt it.

There doesn't seem to be any news directly from the WEF or any other media that is bound to them, but the opposition seems quite alarmed about what they see as nothing less than the handing over of what amounts to national sovereignty to the World Health Organization during their upcoming meeting on 22-28 May 2022 by no less than the President of the United States...

Not only the sovereignty of the United States, but of the whole UN constituency of 193 nations, no less.

This currently includes Israel.

(I feel betrayed as both an Israeli citizen ...and an American citizen. How could "the land of the free and the home of the brave" hand almost 100% of the world over to the "dictatorship of the oligarchy"??? My thought: If this handover goes through, the USA wasn't as advertised. God, help us.)

Snippet from HERE

How It Became Official

On January 18, 2022, with no public awareness, officials from the Biden Administration sent the World Health Organization these extensive amendments to strengthen WHO’s ability to unilaterally intervene into the affairs of nations merely suspected of having a “health emergency” of possible concern to other nations.4 The U.S. amendments cross out a critical existing restriction in the regulations: “WHO shall consult with and attempt to obtain verification from the State Party in whose territory the event is allegedly occurring…”5 By eliminating that, and other clauses (see below), all the shackles will be removed from the Director-General of WHO, enabling him to declare health emergencies at will.

Declaring health emergencies at will is no laughing matter. We have seen a prime example of that already, and have witnessed the taking over of issues far from health concerns with the plandemic.

These were temporary, but what's coming up is threatening to be permanent, if we don't ACT RIGHT NOW.

[NOTE: If you find any better evidence before next week, please let me know in the comments. Also, translation to HEBREW will be very helpful, even though the highest-up in our government do speak (and possibly read and write?) English. Israelis, whether English-language-haters or simply couldn't grasp English, need to know. It just takes me too long. Thanks in advance!]

If this is absolutely true, then our government has a choice it must make, and FAST:

Either give in to America and stay tied to her for practically eternity, or quit the UN immediately, before the vote.

If it's not willing to do the latter, we have no choice but to take down the foreign system of governance we have been subjected to for at least the last 74 years, and make room for our own Great Resetters:

God and His Mashiah.

NOW.

ABBA, HELP!

***

According to Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki) in our current parasha, Behuqothai בחוקותי, we can spot those (both regular people and authorities above us) who intend to annul God's covenant with Israel.

It takes seven steps, the ones referred to in the text of  Vayikra (Leviticus) 26:15-18 that say:

...and if you will consider My statutes revolting, and if your being rejects My ordinances, so as not to perform all My commandments, to annul My covenant — then I, too, will do this to you: I will assign over you panic, and the wasting away, and the fever, causing your eyes to pine and your souls to feel anguish; you will sow your seed in vain, and your enemies will eat it. And I will direct My face against you, you will be struck down before your enemies; those who hate you will subjugate you — you will flee but there will be no one pursuing you. And if during these you will not heed Me, I will increase tormenting you, seven for your sins.

In particular, the summary of the following commentary is on Vayikra (Leviticus) 26:15, the "seven for your sins," specifically on the words to annul My covenant.* I have added the content in (parentheses) and put some text in CAPITAL LETTERS to clarify what I see to be issues in understanding.

What are the sins?

1. They do not study Torah (and how to perform it).

2. They do not perform Torah.

3. They hate those who (seek to) perform Torah.

4. They hate the (real) Torah scholars.

5. They prevent others from performing Torah (to any meaningful extent).

6. They renounce the commandments.

7. They renounce that which is ESSENTIAL, denying BELIEF IN GOD.

WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO WE WANT? AND WHO DO WE WANT RUNNING IT?

PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY'RE god...OR THE REAL GOD AND HIS REPRESENTATIVE???

(...and isn't it funny-strange, all this occurring during the OMER count of a SHMITAH year? Hint, hint.)

UPDATE:

The event in question is the Seventy Fifth [75th] World Health Assembly: Strengthening WHO preparedness for and response to health emergencies. The file with the proposed changes that will hand over the world's nations' sovereignty to the WHO from the hand of Joe Biden is within the Proposal for amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005)

Provisional agenda item 16.2 (13 pp.)

Read, note the changes and pray. They need to be shown that they are not the world's Sovereign, and we need to see His glory before it is too late.

No, I am not panicking. This is real.

The Sin of Lashon Hara: A Chillul Hashem! (Rabbi Sprecher) plus one clear exception to the rule that happened this week

La"G laOmer | 33rd Day of the Omer Count, 5781

by Rabbi Ephraim Sprecher | first published here

The Torah states in Parshat Emor “You shall not desecrate My Holy Name” (Vayikra 22:32).

This verse is the source for the sin of Chillul Hashem, which is one of the most serious sins that a Jew can commit, and for which it is extremely difficult to do tshuvah (Yuma 86a). A little known aspect of Chillul Hashem is when a person habitually speaks or listens to lashon hara. The Chofetz Chaim includes Chillul Hashem in the list of sins one violates when speaking lashon hara.

In explaining the reason for this, he says that generally a person sins for various motivations, either because he has a desire for something, which he cannot control, or because the sins will provide him with some physical pleasure.

However, the sin of lashon hara cannot be considered the fulfillment of a physical drive or pleasure, for which the person could not control his yetzer hara. It is simply habit a person gets into when speaking negatively about others, or listening to others speaking lashon hara. If he realizes that the Torah forbids it, how can he just ignore and continue to violate this serious sin?

Rav Pam would point out that speaking lashon hara is also a Chillul Hashem because that person has so little regard for Hashem’s will that he brazenly violates it. By shamelessly throwing off the yoke of Heaven, he has cheapened and denigrated the Word of Hashem by speaking ill of others.

The Chofetz Chaim adds that the sin of lashon hara is compounded if the one doing this is a distinguished person whom people look up to and respect. When people see how he casually disregards the Will of Hashem, they too will take liberties in the performance of Mitzvot. This is especially true when they see a Talmid Chacham speaking lashon hara (see Rambam Sefer Hamitzvot, negative commandment 63).

This is another important reason to avoid lashon hara in ALL its forms.

This part is not from the Rav, but from me, HDG: A clear exception to this rule is when someone known as a Jew, even for a long period of time, turns out not to be one after all. This week we saw a man whose family has been known as Jews in Israel over an extended period exposed as Christian missionaries. The only thing I might add to what has already been written is:

Beware of strangers who claim high positions (especially if they claim lots of them), start dominating life in a community they are new to and ask for money, like in this case, where the husband claimed to be a Kohen, a mohel, a sofer and a rabbi, and his wife, now passed on, was buried in the Cohanic section of the cemetery, it turns out, under false pretenses. They apparently received a lot of financial help from the unsuspecting communities they lived in. It looks like they were found out when the children started speaking in a manner unfitting for Jews. That is, they were spreading their "good news" aka "the gospel."

If they start pouring it on like this, be sure to ask questions.

Beware, whether single or married, even if they look and dress like Torah-abiding Jews. We have to ask questions. This episode is perfectly good reason to do so. It is a shame that it has to be done, but...

We have the right and the obligation to live in our Holy Land without being harassed by people who do not have the nation of Israel's best interest at heart!

Even if they were actually born Jewish and were everything this man and his family claimed to be — but were not — Christians are commanded to participate in "the great commission." (search)

This, by itself, is against HQB"H's commandments to us, which came first and are forever.

If you haven't yet seen or heard the news about this, here's a short list of articles bearing witness to this very real hillul haShem | 'חילול ה.

There are other exceptions, but I think I've taken enough of the Rabbi's space for today! It is possible he could be prevailed upon to replace my words at some point in the future.

 *MORE UPDATES HERE*

I wish my people a happy La"G laOmer, and healing for the ones who were injured in the tragedy in Meron, and comfort for the families of the 44 45 who were killed. At this time it's not clear which came first, the structural collapse or the stampede. [Later on, it seems there was an attempt to blame the victims by calling their attempts to escape the intense crowding, from which they were not allowed to exit properly, a stampede. See here, here and here.]

This report was written earlier, when the number of dead was not fully assessed, but there is a witness statement that might give us a clue as to what happened. More reports and videos here and here.

UPDATE: Rivka Levy writes about two eyewitnesses to the tragedy (her daughter and a friend). What really happened there? Rivka wrote a followup to this: More Questions about Meron.

No Talking in Shul!

4 Iyyar 5781 / 19th day of the omer, which equals two weeks and five days of the omer count

by Rabbi Ephraim Sprecher  first published here

“My Shabbatot you shall observe, and My Sanctuary you shall revere.” (Vayikra 19:30). Rashi comments that giving the proper respect to the sanctuary (Beit Hamikdash) is expressed by not entering with one's walking stick, or while wearing shoes or a money belt or with dust on one's feet. Today we have no Beit Hamikdash, but the Gemara in Megillah 29 teaches that our shuls are מקדשי מעט which means mini sanctuaries and must be treated with great respect and reverence.

Tractate Derech Eretz Raba chapter 3, one of the 14 so called “minor tractates,” records an incident at the end of the life of R. Eleazar ben Azariah when he was seriously ill, his students came to him and asked him “How can we be worthy of life in the World to Come?” He answered them “Go out and be careful with the honor due to your friends, and when you are standing in prayer, know before Whom you are standing. This will earn you life in the World to Come.”

Chavos Yair wonders why R. Eleazar ben Azariah prefaces his advice with the words “Go out”. It seems out of place and irrelevant to the advice he offers.

He explains that R. Eleazar ben Azariah’s comment for addressing the great difficulty some people have avoiding talking during davening. This occurs mainly on Shabbat when friends see each other and have time to catch up on news of family, community or business. This is especially true now that many of us are back in shul, after a year, and some of us feel that we have to catch up with our friends, so we must be conscious of this.

Unfortunately this talking often takes place during davening or Kriat HaTorah, and leads to a desecration of Hashem’s sanctuary. At times a person feels that it is impolite not to respond to a question or comment from one's shul friend and feels compelled to talk, even if it is in the middle of davening in shul.

In this light, we can understand the message of R. Eleazar ben Azariah. If you want to be careful in the honor due your friends, then GO OUT of Shul and talk there. When you are davening in shul, be aware before Whom you are praying. This will earn you life in the World to Come!

If only people would take to heart the words of the Chavos Yair and thereby bring about a marked improvement in the decorum in our shuls, they would then merit the great benefits that come from sincere prayer.

Will Animal Sacrifices be Restored When Moshiach Comes??

20 Nisan 5780 | Erev Shvi'i shel Pessah

by Rabbi Ephraim Sprecher
Sefer Vayikra is taken up with sacrificial laws and rituals. For many people, it is easier to relate to narrative portions of the Torah or Mitzvot that apply in our day than to those dealing with Mishkan sacrifices. The last sacrifices were offered in 68 C.E., before the Second Temple was destroyed. Many people would find it hard to conceive how the sacrificial system could actually be restored in the Messianic Era.

Yet the Rambam tells us in Hilchot Melachim 11 that Moshiach will build the Third Temple and reestablish the entire Sacrificial System. The question is, what is the purpose of the sacrifices? According to Kabbalah, the Temple Altar is a metaphor for our body and our table at which we eat, containing lessons about how we should go about satisfying our vital, natural function.

The "daily diet" of animal, wheat, oil and wine offerings on the Temple Altar corresponds to our daily diet of animal and grain products, fruits and vegetables that go on our table and into our mouth. The reason why some feel uncomfortable about the sacrificial ritual is because it presents our existential situation so boldly in the form of animal blood, fat and other offerings on the Altar.

It is a fundamental law of creation that higher life forms consume lower forms of life in order to exist. When a lower life form is eaten and ingested by a higher life form, the lower life form is "elevated" by its turning into the body and nourishing the activities of the higher life form. As humans, our blood and fat are made up of material, derived from other lower levels of existence, mineral, vegetable and animal. Our physical life functions come to nourish and serve a higher life form – the soul.

Kabbalah explains that the Temple Altar and the Korbanot guide us to elevate our own blood, fat and energy to fuel the fire of G-d's Service on the Altar of our own bodies. The Altar fire is a metaphor for the human soul as the verse in Mishlei says, "The candle of G‑d is the soul of a human being." Our bodies "burn up" the various nutrients we take in, just as the Altar burns the sacrifices.

Our body requires tending in order to serve as an "Altar" for G-d's Service just as the Temple Altar had to be tended. The opening Mitzvah of the day in the Temple – removal of the ashes of the consumed sacrifices may be compared to what is the first physical functioning of a person's day, the elimination of wastes to cleanse the body for G-d's service. Keeping the Altar fire stoked was the daily task of the Kohanim.

So too each one of us has the task of keeping the "Altar" of the body properly maintained with the right nutrients in the right quantities. As Kohanim of our own bodies, our aim must be to keep the soul fire burning brightly every day.

The fact that the Kohen must eat from a sin or guilt offering and thereby accomplish atonement for the sinner is a wonder. Having the correct intention is a recurrent theme in all Sacrifices. The Kohen has to have the correct intention at every stage in the sacrificial ritual.

The Sacrificial System teaches us to eat with the intention of maintaining our body, our personal "Altar of G-d" with nutrients that we can elevate to His service. In this way we will be able to utilize our energy to do more Mitzvot. The blessings we make before and after eating serve as a focus that all eating can be a Service of G‑d.

May we be worthy of bringing the Thanksgiving offering in the rebuilt Third Temple very soon in our day.
